Book Tasting
Austin I.S.D. gave teachers 300 brand new books for our classroom library. It was like opening presents on Christmas Day! Some of my books were looking pretty scrappy, so adding new books really gave my library the new make over it needed. A huge thank you to our literacy department! Below... are pics of students sampling books at a "Book Tasting" event. This was a really fun way to introduce the new books to everyone. Wouldn't be a Book Tasting without bookworms.
Ms. Finnegan held a mock election in the library. Behind the tables are some volunteers helping voters go thru the line.
Mr. Hill arranged special guest author, Phil Binder, to speak to students about the writing process. Phil shared an inspiring story about a humble man that made a difference in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. I know my class has more insight about writing, and will use his suggestions for writing and illustrating. Mr. HIll bought each class an autographed copy of one his books, A Whole New Ball Game. It's really neat to see the kids search for this book in our classroom library, or when they've found it, and show it off to another kid..
We're so lucky that Anderson High School has a fabulous Theatre Arts Department. They invited Pillow to a free performance to "Lily and the Purple Plastic Purse." It was an adorable play!. The Anderson students did a fantastic performance, and made us feel so welcomed.
Southwest Dairy Farm visited our school to teach students information about milk production, nutrition, and dairy products. My class was amazed to see a Holstein fill a glass jar of milk. This was a fun presentation, and a wonderful experience for kids.
Still to come: Author's Camp
I'm always amazed at the incredible guests that visit Pillow.
Career Day
One of the COOLEST events that we all look forward to is Career Day. Pictured above our Austin's Finest, APD, and the fire department. But inside the gym, there were so many booths with all kinds of careers that kids visited. Mr. Hill books professionals from banks, to photography. My class was so excited to go to each booth and learn about how employees spent their day working, and the skills needed to perform their jobs.
